Arloesi Gwynedd Wledig has been in discussion with Snowdonia National Park on key elements of the Snowdon Partnership Plan to upgrade and modernise essential visitor infrastructure in the area, leading to an improved visitor experience and access to Snowdon.

The main aim of this project is to pilot an innovative digital infrastructure for public Wi-Fi connectivity around Snowdon.

During the consultation process and through the development stages of the Snowdon Partnership Plan, many stakeholders and members of the public emphasised the need to improve communication around Snowdon. (e.g. ‘Live’ weather information on summit/ Sherpa timetable/ Suitable routes/ emergency details).

One important stakeholder who expressed their opinion was the Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team:

“There is a real need to improve communication connectivity around Snowdon and this will reduce the need to send mountain rescuers/ avoid calls …” – Phil Benbow (Chair – North Wales Mountain Rescue Association/Task Supervisor – Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team

There are three stages to this project:

1) The first step will be to appoint a digital consultant to carry out a survey to review the area, the requirements of the connectivity. Then investigate what innovative digital infrastructure can be trialled around Snowdon for public Wi-Fi connectivity.

2) Installation of appropriate infrastructure to establish a public Wi-Fi Access around Snowdon. (whether it is one type, or a combination of technology). The intention is to install the infrastructure around the foot of Snowdon. Costs will include a site visit by a digital IT company to co-ordinate and plan the required network, including the installation of equipment.

3) Pilot a data collection sensor to monitor the foot of Snowdon and the wider Snowdonia area (e.g. Weather/ transport/ mountain rescue/ collection of donations/ pedestrian numbers)

We have now appointed AWTG to do the first phase of the work.
