This project has been funded through the Gwynedd Pilot Fund, a Fund which has been targeted at community groups in Gwynedd to enable them to trial new activities in their communities.

Tafarn yr Heliwr is a Community Benefit Social Enterprise with the intention of buying and re-opening the Sportsman in Nefyn as a Community Pub.

The main aim of the initiative is to bring the community closer together before, during and after they have successfully opened the community hub; offering volunteering and paid opportunities locally and therefore contributing to the economy. Their vision is that the community hub will provide a range of services to the community and offer a café / bar; accommodation in the form of a comfortable and reasonable bunkhouse and a simple menu that makes the most of the produce available locally.

The group was successful in their bid to the Piloting Fund to receive financial assistance to commission a specialist to produce a Business Plan for the community pub. Having a detailed Business Plan was crucial for this social enterprise in order to assess the full financial implications of the project and to assess the financial sustainability of the project in the long term, providing assurance to the committee and any funding bodies that the Business Plan is sustainable for the future and offers value for money should they make an application for financial support.

The Business Plan was completed in July 2018 and was presented to the public, which meant that the group could use it as they proceed with their community shares campaign to reinforce their vision of re-opening the pub as Community pub.

By now, the community has succeeded in buying the pub by collecting over £ 85,000 through community shares. Tafarn yr Heliwr has recently applied for funding from the Calor Company as part of the Rural Community Fund. The money would go towards painting the exterior of the building, new signs, lights and flower baskets.
