Welsh Awards

The ‘Most Welsh Business in the World’ awards held across Gwynedd.

The project was an opportunity to celebrate those businesses benefitting from using the Welsh language within their business already, and in turn inspire other businesses.

The awards were to be quite different from the norm, shying away from corporate and professional awards to a fun, tongue in cheek way of celebrating businesses that already use Welsh within their businesses. The project selected 3 categories, which were the ‘Most Welsh…….Pub or Restaurant’…’Street’ and ‘shop’. The awards will use social media heavily, and the public will vote for their winners.

A short film was created to generate interest in the project and encourage members of the public to nominate for the Welshest businesses via social media. In all over 100 businesses / streets were nominated and we selected the top 3 within each category. Short films were created on each of the 9 businesses / streets and were shared via social media. This generated in excess of 10,000 engagements which is significantly more than traditional business awards.

The main outputs were as follows:

  • Starting a conversation regarding the benefits of the Welsh Language in business.
  • The creation of 10 films on the businesses and streets highlighting how the Welsh language can benefit their trade.

The winners of the competition were:

  • Welshest Street in World: Stryd y Plas, Caernarfon
  • Welshest Pub in the World: The Black Boy, Caernarfon
  • Welshest Shop in the World: Becws, Aberdaron
