Egni Bro – Feasibility Study

Pilot scheme to create a community energy strategy.

The main aim of these feasibility studies is to identify opportunities to: –

  1. Increase the number of low carbon energy generation and storage schemes – electricity, heat and fuels – in community ownership.

  1. Use the energy from these schemes in the area by existing users/uses, and potential and new users who can be created or attracted to the area, as well as creating income generating opportunities locally by selling the energy to other areas.

Egni Bro includes Blaenau Ffestiniog, Trawsfynydd and then following the river Dwyryd and Dyffryn Maentwrog through Penrhyndeudraeth down to Porthmadog

The strategy will identify opportunities for individual community energy enterprises in the area to work together to achieve the following 5 objectives:

o          Contribute to making the area zero carbon

o          Reduce fuel poverty

o          Create and secure jobs locally

o          Strengthen the local economy

o          Improve the financial viability of community energy schemes

The strategy will look at the sources of energy currently used in the area for heating and transport by consumers in the following sectors:  domestic, commercial, public and third sector, and it will identify the opportunities to exchange imported energy and fuel for that which is produced locally by community enterprises.

The strategy will identify the opportunities to use innovative new local energy marketing models such as ‘Energy Local – Ynni Lleol’, ‘blockchain’, as well as new wires and distribution networks in community ownership.

Arloesi Gwynedd Wledig and Cwmni Bro Ffestiniog appointed Egnida Consulting to deliver the studies, the report is available here.
