Community kitchen in Caernarfon
The main aim of this project is to take advantage of the access that members of the Management Committee, together with the Peblig ward Communities First Programme, have to the area’s mothers and families in order to implement a programme that will have a measurable impact on eating and cooking attitudes and practices of the local residents.
Arising from the Peblig area’s Communities First programme, Caernarfon, there is an aspiration to establish a Community Initiative which provides nutritious, multi-purpose food – a mix of fast takeaway food, a daily cafĂ© special, and a restaurant service on weekends, together with preparing food for occasional off-site events.
A successful application to CIST Gwynedd has been made to employ a chef for the enterprise for a period of 6 months. The enterprise will then have to pay the chef’s wages. The pilot project supported the installation of the kitchen, training sessions and raising awareness of healthy food.
According to the Welsh Government’s Multiple Deprivation Index, Peblig ward is regularly amongst the top 10% of the most deprived areas in Wales. In Peblig (Caernarfon) and Marchog (Bangor) we see the lowest pockets of economic activity. Peblig also has the lowest levels of educational attainment in Gwynedd with 50.3% of the population with no qualifications.
