Living and Being in the Community

Helping community groups recruit young people to identify and respond to the challenges facing their communities

During the summer of 2020, an open call was arranged to find out which communities in Gwynedd were keen to be part of a plan to identify challenges in their community over an eight-week period. 18 people from five communities took part in the scheme, namely the communities of Blaenau Ffestiniog, Penygroes, Bethesda, Llanystumdwy and Llanaelhaearn. Closing events were organized for all communities at the end of the scheme for the young people to share their findings. It was decided to give five of the young people a further opportunity to develop their research – three from the Ogwen Partnership and two from Cwmni Bro Ffestiniog.

– Ogwen Partnership- Creating a Young People’s Assembly
Lisa Megan led a community consultation on behalf of the Ogwen Partnership during the eight-week scheme. Although a standard report and research were submitted, only 8% of the sample was under 25 years of age, highlighting a trend in community consultation, and a gap within the Ogwen Partnership to reach this important group within their community. Therefore, Lisa and two others, Cadi Roberts and Elin Cain, were appointed as Living and Being officers to organize a consultation event with young people in the area. The purpose of the event will be to present the findings of the community survey to the young people, as well as seeking their views and input into community development work in the area.

– Cwmni Bro Ffestiniog-
Cian Cadwaladr’s idea was to develop a skate park in his local area, Bro Ffestiniog. He has a keen interest in the subject and through his research he learned how social enterprises in Britain have achieved their goal of opening such a park in their communities. Cian will be carrying out further research on behalf of Cwmni Bro to try and make this happen in their community.
Elfed intends to create a co-operative with four regions in Wales (including Gwynedd and Anglesey wool) by looking at what could be produced with wool, as well as revitalizing the old Welsh industry with wool and building the local and national economy. He believes that this would create local jobs and raise the standard of living for farmers, help the environment and re-ignite old industry in Wales. Elfed will also contribute to Menter Môn’s bid for a government co-operative and supply chain development fund fund.

– Antur Aelhaearn- Work club and employer forum
During the eight-week plan, Tomos and Cian gathered information to understand the problems faced by the young people of Llanelhaearn and Trefor. Cian will expand on their research with a view to creating a youth work club. This would be a way of sharing information about work available locally, as well as providing job training. The club would also collaborate with the area’s Employers Forum by advertising the skills needed by the area’s employers.
